How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure your room(s) - Use a tape measure to get the length and width of each room in feet, inches, yards, or meters.
  2. Select measurement unit - Choose your preferred unit from the settings panel.
  3. Enter dimensions - Input the length and width for each room. For L-shaped rooms, enter additional dimensions.
  4. Add more rooms - Click "Add Another Room" if you have multiple areas to carpet.
  5. Set waste allowance - Use the slider to add extra material for cuts and seams (typically 10-15%).
  6. Enter pricing (optional) - Add carpet, padding, and labor costs per sq ft for a cost estimate.
  7. Review results - Your carpet area is calculated automatically!

Rectangular Room:

Area = Length × Width

L-Shaped Room:

Area = (L1 × W1) + (L2 × W2)

Total with Waste:

Total Area × (1 + Waste %)

Unit Conversions:

1 sq yard = 9 sq feet

1 sq meter = 10.764 sq feet

1 sq foot = 144 sq inches

  • Measure twice: Always double-check your measurements before ordering carpet.
  • Account for irregular shapes: Break complex rooms into rectangles and add them together.
  • Door clearance: Ensure doors can open over new carpet (may need trimming).
  • Pattern matching: Patterned carpet requires extra material - use 15-20% waste.
  • Carpet roll width: Standard rolls are 12 ft wide. Plan seams carefully.
  • Get professional quotes: Use this estimate as a baseline when comparing contractor prices.

Waste allowance accounts for:

  • Cutting and fitting around corners
  • Seams and transitions
  • Pattern matching
  • Doorways and closets
  • Unexpected issues during installation
Recommended: Use 10% for simple rectangular rooms, 15% for rooms with closets or angles, and 20% for complex layouts or patterned carpet.
