What Exactly Is a Footing?

- Continuous (Trench): Builders use these long, dug-out lines of concrete to hold up heavy foundation walls or long retaining walls.
- Spread (Pad): These are wide, square, or rectangular blocks. You will usually pour spread footings to hold up heavy, single point-loads, like steel columns in a basement or big deck posts.
- Pier (Round): If you are digging down with an auger, you are making a pier. These round columns are perfect for fence posts or lighter deck supports. They easily reach deep below the frost line.

How deep do I need to dig?
Your footing must reach below the frost line for your specific zip code. If the ground freezes underneath your concrete, the expanding ice will heave the footing upwards, cracking your structure. Always check with your local permit office. They will tell you exactly how deep you have to dig.
Do I need to put rebar in the footing?
Concrete is incredibly strong against being squished (compressive strength) but weak against bending or pulling forces. Adding steel rebar gives the concrete flexibility and strength to resist cracking. Most building codes require rebar in continuous and spread footings.
How thick should a spread pad be?
A good rule of thumb is that the footing thickness should be at least equal to the width of the wall or post sitting on it. Usually, this means a minimum of 6 to 8 inches thick, but heavier structures need thicker pads.
