The formula calculates the volume of the rectangular beam in cubic feet, then multiplies by the wood density. Standard glulam densities range from ~28 to 44 lbs/ft³ depending on the wood species used.

Example: A 20 ft long Douglas Fir-Larch beam at 5-1/8" × 12" (standard size):

  • Convert width: 5.125 in ÷ 12 = 0.4271 ft
  • Convert depth: 12 in ÷ 12 = 1.0 ft
  • Volume = 20 × 0.4271 × 1.0 = 8.542 ft³
  • Weight = 8.542 × 34 = 290.42 lbs
  • Glulam densities can vary based on moisture content — the values used here assume ~12% moisture (standard for construction).
  • For the most accurate results, check the manufacturer's spec sheet for the exact density of your glulam product.
  • Common US standard widths are 3-1/8", 5-1/8", 6-3/4", 8-3/4", and 10-3/4".
  • Depths increment in 1-1/2" lamination layers (e.g., 6", 7-1/2", 9", 10-1/2", etc.).
