Take the Guesswork Out of Your Landscaping Project

Planning a backyard project? Laying down a new gravel driveway, a walkway, or a fire pit area is exciting. But figuring out exactly how much rock you need? That part is usually a massive headache.

If you guess wrong, you face two annoying problems. You either run out of gravel halfway through your weekend, or you end up with a giant, expensive pile of leftover rocks sitting in your yard forever.

That is exactly why we built this Gravel Calculator. It does all the heavy math for you, so you can order the perfect amount of material every single time.

How to Use the Gravel Calculator

We designed this tool to be super easy to use. Just grab your tape measure and follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Pick Your Project Shape

Look at the area you want to fill. Is it a standard square or rectangle? Or are you filling a round fire pit or circular garden bed? Just click the Rectangle or Circle button to get started. (See Also: Escalation Cost Calculator)

Step 2: Enter Your Dimensions

Next, type in the size of your space.

  • For a rectangle: Enter the length and the width.
  • For a circle: Enter the diameter (the distance straight across the middle of the circle).
  • Depth (Thickness): Tell the calculator how deep you want the gravel to be. Most pathways need about 2 to 3 inches, while driveways usually need 4 inches or more.

Cool feature: You don’t have to convert your measurements! Our dropdown menus let you choose feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters. You can even select “Custom” to create your own unit of measurement.

Step 3: Choose Your Material

Not all rocks weigh the same. A cubic yard of fluffy topsoil is much lighter than a cubic yard of solid river rock.

Use the dropdown menu to pick what you are buying. We included the most common options: (See Also: Slope Per Foot Calculator)

  • Crushed Stone
  • Pea Gravel
  • River Rock
  • Base Gravel
  • Sand
  • Topsoil

If you are buying something unique and you know its exact weight, just select Custom Density and type in the pounds per cubic foot.

Step 4: Add a Waste Factor

Here is a pro tip that many beginners miss: gravel compacts when you step on it or drive over it. It also spills a little when you move it in a wheelbarrow.

To make sure you don’t run short, our calculator automatically adds a 5% Waste / Compaction Factor. You can easily change this number to 0% if you want exact math, or bump it up to 10% just to be safe.

Step 5: Estimate Your Cost

Want to know how much this will hurt your wallet? Enter the price of the gravel. You can choose whether your local supplier charges by the Ton or by the Cubic Yard. (See Also: Price Per Sqm Calculator)

Understanding Your Results

As soon as you type in your numbers, the blue results box updates instantly. Here is what your results mean:

  • Volume Needed: This tells you how much physical space the gravel takes up. It gives you the answer in both cubic yards (yd³) and cubic feet. Most bulk delivery companies sell by the cubic yard.
  • Estimated Weight: This tells you how heavy the load is in both tons and pounds. This is super important if you plan to haul the gravel yourself in a pickup truck!
  • Estimated Cost: If you typed in a price, you will see your total estimated bill right here.

Handy Bonus Features

We added a few extra buttons to make your life easier:

  • Copy Results: Click this button to instantly copy your final numbers. You can easily paste them into a text message to your spouse or an email to your landscaper.
  • Print: Want to take your numbers to the hardware store? Hit the print button for a clean, easy-to-read paper copy.
  • Reset Calculator: Made a mistake or want to measure a different part of your yard? Hit the reset button to clear the board and start fresh.
